Powergrid Corporation of India

Context – The Prime Minister had recently appealed to the people to switch off their lights voluntarily on the 5th of April and there were apprehensions that it may cause instability in the grid and fluctuation in voltage which may harm the electrical appliances.

About Power Grid Corporation of India –

  • Originated in 1989 under the Companies Act of 1956, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited was incorporated as the National Power Transmission Corporation of India limited.
  • Its name was changed in 1992 to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
  • Powergrid was incorporated as a public limited company, wholly owned by the Government of India. Now, PowerGrid is a Maharatna company.
  • The  electric utility company is headquartered in Gurugram.
  • Powergrid is responsible for the transmission of more than 50% of the total power generated in India through its network.
  • Its subsidiary company POSOCO (Power System Operation Corporation Ltd.) engages in power management.

Prime Minister recently paid tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram on the birth anniversary of Babu Jagjivan Ram.

About Babu Jagjivan Ram –

  • Samta Diwas is the celebration of birth anniversary of nationalist politician Babu Jagjivan Ram. The day emphasises on bringing about equality among all spheres of the society.
  • His beliefs were of great significance in the past era as there was predominance of multi layered society.
  • He focused on the harsh rules of the society and pressed for the abolishment of this society. His 50 years as a MP is a world record.
  • He took part in India’s independence struggle and was founder member of the All India Depressed Classes League, an organisation dedicated to attaining equality for untouchables. He had also led the rural labour movement.

FCI sets all time record in single day transportation of food grains

FCI has set a new record in single day movement by moving 70 rakes carrying 1.93 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) continuously for two days on 03.04.20 and 04.04.20.

About Food Corporation of India –

  • Food Corporation of India (FCI) is a Public Sector Undertaking, under the Department of Food & Public Distribution, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
  • FCI is a statutory body set up in 1965 under the Food Corporations Act 1964. It was established against the backdrop of major shortage of grains, especially wheat.
  • Simultaneously, Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) was created in 1965 to recommend remunerative prices to farmers.
  • It has primary duty to undertake purchase, store, move/transport, distribute and sell food grains and other foodstuffs.

About Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices –

  • The CACP is an attached office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP since 1985, earlier named as Agricultural Prices Commission) came into existence in January 1965.
  • It is mandated to recommend minimum support prices (MSPs) to incentivise the cultivators to adopt modern technology, and raise productivity and overall grain production in line with the emerging demand patterns in the country.

Tests, treatment free under Ayushman Bharat

The Central government has decided to provide free testing and treatment of COVID-19 under the Ayushman Bharat schemes.

Salient features of Ayushman Bharat scheme (Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana) –

  • PMJAY is a centrally sponsored scheme. It is entirely funded by Government and the funding is shared between Centre and State governments as per prevailing guidelines of Ministry of Finance.
  • PMJAY provides health cover up to Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation to around 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families (approx. 50 crore beneficiaries).
  • PMJAY is an entitlement based scheme. This scheme covers poor and vulnerable families based on deprivation and occupational criteria as per SECC database.
  • PMJAY provides cashless and paperless access to services for the beneficiary at the point of service in any (both public and private) empanelled hospitals across India. In other words, a beneficiary from one State can avail benefits from an empanelled Hospital anywhere in the Country.
  • Under PMAJY, the States are free to choose the modalities for implementation. They can implement the scheme through insurance company or directly through the Trust/ Society or mixed model.
  • There is no restriction on family size, ensuring all members of designated families specifically girl child and senior citizens get coverage.
  • A well-defined Complaint and Public Grievance Redressal Mechanism, has been put in place through which complaints/ grievances are registered, acknowledged, escalated for relevant action, resolved and monitored.
  • PMJAY has created a robust IT system for implementation and role of real time transaction data.
  • At National level, National Health Authority (NHA) has been set up as an attached office to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to manage the implementation of the scheme.

Rapid antibody testing for hotspots first : ICMR

The Indian Council of Medical Research said the rapid antibody-based blood test for COVID-19 will be deployed in clusters and hotspots showing high incidence of confirmed cases.

What is RT-PCR test?

The COVID-19 RT-PCR test is a real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) test for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 in upper and lower respiratory specimens (such as nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, sputum, lower respiratory tract aspirates, bronchoalveolar lavage, and nasopharyngeal wash/aspirate or nasal aspirate) collected from individuals suspected of COVID-19 by their healthcare provider.

What is rapid-antibody test?

Rapid antibody test is a blood-based test. RT-PCR test detects the virus and the antibody tests, which use blood, detect the body’s response to the virus. A positive results tells that the body was exposed to the virus.
