About the Exam

What is CLAT?

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is the national entrance exam for admission to the 5-year integrated undergraduate law programmes (BA LLB and similar) at the National Law Universities (NLUs) that are part of the Consortium of NLUs. Top-ranked NLUs such as NLSIU Bengaluru and NALSAR Hyderabad admit students through CLAT, and many other law schools also accept CLAT scores.

CLAT is held once a year, usually in the first week of December. It is a comprehension-based test: instead of memorising facts, you read passages and answer questions on them. That is why reading speed, reasoning ability and awareness of current events matter more than rote learning.

CLAT UG Eligibility

  • Qualification: Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board.
  • Minimum marks: 45% for General / OBC / EWS / NRI; 40% for SC / ST.
  • Class 12 students: Students appearing in their Class 12 board exams can also apply.
  • Age limit: No upper age limit.

Always confirm final eligibility in the official notification at consortiumofnlus.ac.in.

When is CLAT 2027?

CLAT 2027 will be held on Sunday, 6 December 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, in offline mode.

Yes. Starting in Class 11 gives you nearly two years to build reading habits, reasoning skills and current affairs knowledge, which makes the final year much easier. Class 12 students can also appear for CLAT.

Do I need to know law to prepare for CLAT?

No. Legal Reasoning questions give you the legal principle inside the passage. You only need to read carefully and apply it to the facts. We also teach basic legal concepts so you feel comfortable with legal passages.

Is there negative marking in CLAT?

Yes. Each correct answer gives 1 mark and each wrong answer deducts 0.25 marks. Unanswered questions get zero.
