D. Kerouac's novel "On the Road";

Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" is rightfully considered one of the key works of the twentieth century, despite the fact that at first many critics argued that the novel had no artistic value and a complete plot. For a long time, the novel received extremely negative reviews, and in the fifties, almost all publishers abandoned it. Nevertheless, in 1957, six years after writing, the novel was published in the USA, and it became available to Russian readers only in 1960, having been published in parts in the magazine "Foreign Literature".

"On the road" is a unique work, and today it is considered one of the best demonstrations of the ideology and inner world of the generation to which Kerouac himself belonged. Fame came to Kerouac posthumously - during his lifetime he did not know that in the early two thousandth years his novel would be awarded several prestigious literary prizes at once.

The plot of the novel "On the Road", at first glance, is simple - the narrative is conducted in real time and describes the travels of the protagonist Sal Paradise and his best friend Dean Moriarty in Mexico and the USA. The novel is autobiographical - Kerouac describes the life of himself, as well as his friend Neil Cassidy, whose life was far from the ideal of the American dream. Alcoholism, crimes, carjackings, arrests, criminal past - Kerouac does not consider this an obstacle to learning how to truly live. The whole novel, in fact, is devoted to how Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, traveling across America, learn to live. The realism and wisdom of all the book descriptions is also explained by the fact that part of the novel is Kerouac's real diary entries, which he kept while traveling with Neil Cassidy.

Despite the incredible events that develop in the life of each hero of the novel, the main character remains the road - no matter what happens in the lives of Moriarty and Paradise, the road finds them again and again, extracts them from their usual daily routine, forces them to leave family life and go in search of unknown adventures, insights and disappointments again.

The novel "On the Road" is the antithesis of the American dream. Of course, there could not be a happy ending, because there was no happy ending in the real life of Kerouac and Cassidy. The penultimate fourth part of the novel tells about Paradise's illness, which he received as a result of alcoholism, drug addiction and casual relationships with hipsters and prostitutes, after which his best friend goes back to his family, leaving the writer to his fate. This episode is the end of the story of inseparable friends, and if the book also tells about Paradise's solo journey, in which he refused to take Moriarty with him, then Kerouac, returning to New York after an illness, immediately began writing a novel that later became a cult work of the 20th century. Writing "On the Road" spontaneously took Kerouac only three weeks. The author did not hide the fact that he improvised while creating his work - thus, he sought to gain some kind of enlightenment, which he had always dreamed of. Kerouac managed to convey the true atmosphere of the road and journey, which attracts every reader of the book and forces them to follow the author into unknown distances in order to gain new experiences and purge themselves from the past.
